This is a Term 12 position with an initial appointment of 24 months.
The School of Public Health (SPH) at the University of Alberta was the first school of public health accredited in Canada in 2012 by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH). SPH offers a course-based Master of Public Health (MPH), an MA in Community Engagement (course-based and thesis-based), and thesis (MSc and PhD) graduate programs, supported by 31 faculty members. Currently, there are approximately 320 graduate students. SPH is among the top 5 research-intensive faculties in the University.
The Master of Public Health (MPH) is designed to equip practitioners with the knowledge and skills needed to play roles in key public health functions such as assessment, planning, action implementation, and evaluation, in governmental, non-governmental, community-based, and industry settings across sectors and jurisdictions.
The School of Public Health invites applications for a full-time, 2-year (renewable) Academic Teaching Staff position, beginning no later than June 1, 2026. The teaching load is commensurate with the guidelines set out in the ATS agreement and will be equivalent to 6 courses equivalents per year.
This appointment requires advanced training in public health (e.g., MPH, MSc, PhD or DrPH). Relevant practical experience in the field of public health will be considered an asset. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in public health education and to those with experience serving in leadership roles with governmental or non-governmental organizations and using evidence to inform public health actions.
The School of Public Health integrates research, graduate education, and community engagement to improve population health. Its interdisciplinary structure includes academic programs, centres, and research teams focused on tackling pressing public health issues locally and globally. The School is dedicated to creating knowledge, training public health professionals, and advancing evidence-informed policy and practice.The appointee will primarily teach undergraduate and MPH/MACE courses in the School of Public Health. Courses may be taught in person, asynchronously online or hybrid, depending on the course. The following courses may be part of the teaching required:
SPH 303 – Health Promotion in an Unequal World
SPH 535 – Using and Creating Evidence in Public Health Practice
SPH 536 – Engagement for Public Health Action
SPH 541 – Public Health Practice & Professional Skills
SPH 546 – Public Health Practice & Professional Skills
SPH 562 – Understanding and Improving the Health of Populations
This position includes additional duties related to course coordination, curriculum revision and development of courses aimed at undergraduate students. Advising of course-based students (i.e., MPH, MACE) during their practicum will also be expected.
- Applicants should have advanced training in public health (e.g., MPH, MSc, PhD or DrPH);
- A minimum of 5 years of related public health experience in governmental, non-governmental, community-based, academic or industry settings;
- The candidate must demonstrate high-quality and engaged teaching for graduate courses and contribute to service and community engagement missions of the School. This includes teaching of graduate students, mentoring of colleagues and trainees, participating in School-wide planning, and the development of initiatives that improve public health in collaboration with communities, organizations, industry, and government agencies.
